Total with tip—

Splitting a bill without arguing

Enter the bill total, choose a tip percentage, and the calculator shows the tip amount and the combined total. If you enter a number of people, it also shows the per-person amount, assuming the bill is split equally. Custom percentages handle the awkward cases — 15% in a no-tip culture, 18–20% for table service in the US, 10–12% elsewhere.

Rounding is a social choice many people make: round the per-person share up to the nearest whole amount so nobody fumbles for coins. The calculator gives exact figures; you decide whether to round.

Tip amount = bill × (tip % ÷ 100). Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ people. On 85 with 18% tip: tip is 15.30, total is 100.30, and four people each pay 25.08.

Six colleagues and a 132.50 bill

Six colleagues share a 132.50 bill and want a 20% tip. The tip is 26.50, the total is 159, and each person owes 26.50 exactly. If one person's meal was 32.50 and they want to pay only their own share plus tip, their portion is 39 — the calculator's equal split is a starting point, not a rule.

Tipping on tax, and other missteps

  • Tipping on tax. In the US the tip is conventionally calculated on the pre-tax subtotal; tipping on the total is a small over-tip, not an error.
  • Forgetting that shared bottles or extras are in the bill — equal splits punish the lightest eater.
  • Double-tipping when a service charge is already on the bill. Read the receipt: 'service included' means no extra tip is expected.
  • Using 20% as a global default. Norms vary from zero (Japan) to 10% (much of Europe) to 15–20% (US table service).

Tipping questions

What is a standard tip percentage?

In the United States, 15–20% for table service is customary. Many other countries expect little or nothing — check local norms rather than importing a percentage.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Pre-tax is the traditional convention. On a 100 bill with 8% tax, tipping 18% pre-tax is 18, versus 19.44 on the post-tax total.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

This tool splits equally. For uneven splits, sum the individual shares, apply the tip to the subtotal, and divide the tip proportionally.

Is it rude to tip less than 15%?

Context matters: poor service justifies less in US norms, but in countries where tipping is uncommon, 15% can be an unwelcome gesture. Default to local practice.

Does the calculator handle currency?

It displays US-style currency formatting but the arithmetic is currency-agnostic — the percentages work for any currency.
